Add Grok to a Slack workspace

Grok for Slack answers in channels, threads, and DMs. It can search messages and files, look up users, and run workspace actions behind confirmation prompts.

Install

1. Open slack.hooks.x.ai and choose Add to Slack.
2. A workspace admin authorizes the app.
3. Add an xAI API key from console.x.ai. Grok walks you through the key step after install. You can attach more than one key and load-balance with slash commands.

Talk to it

1. Mention @Grok in a channel. It replies in a thread so the channel stays readable.
2. Open a DM with Grok for private drafts and one-off asks.
3. Mention it inside an existing thread when you want it to read that thread’s history before answering.

Ask it to remember a preference (“default to Python, keep answers short”). Search asks work across channels and shared files it can see.

Pitfalls

• Sensitive workspace actions ask for confirmation. Do not approve a write you have not read.
• Without an API key the app cannot run. Keep keys in console.x.ai and rotate them there.
• AI answers can be wrong. Treat Slack replies the same way you treat any other Grok answer: verify before you ship.
