Add a payment method in the xAI Console

Save a card or other payment instrument on an xAI team so prepaid purchases, auto top-up, and monthly invoiced charges have something on file before the next spend spike. Official Manage Billing documents the manual path on console.x.ai: under Billing → Billing details → Add Payment Information you add a payment method, and purchases also keep the instrument you just used so the next buy is easier. Docs note that xAI currently does not allow removing the last payment method on file. Start in the correct team picker, because billing edits affect every user on that team.

What you need

Admin access to change billing for the selected team, a payment instrument that Console accepts for your region, and a clear plan for whether this card will become the default charged instrument. Due to regulatory requirements, Indian payment cards cannot be saved for later charges; the billing FAQ directs those buyers to purchase prepaid credits via Guest Checkout instead. Add Payment Information

1. Open console.x.ai and confirm the team picker shows the team that should own the payment method.
2. Go to Billing → Billing details and choose Add Payment Information, matching the path named in Manage Billing.
3. Complete the provider form for the card or bank details Console presents, then save so the method appears on file for later purchases and auto top-up.
4. When you already buy credits during the same session, expect Console to keep that checkout instrument on file automatically per the billing guide, then confirm the new method shows under billing details before you rely on it for auto top-up or invoiced charges.

If ACH microdeposit verification is still pending, the Management list route may show a pendingPaymentMethod with a hosted verification URL; finish that flow before you treat the method as chargeable. After the method is saved, switch the default with Set the default payment method via the xAI Management API when finance wants a specific card for top-ups.

Keep address and tax current

Payment methods alone do not fix invoice letterhead. Update the address and optional tax lines under Billing → Payment with Update billing address in the xAI Console before the next prepaid purchase or monthly invoice, because docs state xAI cannot regenerate invoices after they issue.

Pitfalls

Adding a method on the wrong team in the picker attaches the card to a sandbox or sibling team that never pays production traffic. Expecting Console to let you delete the final remaining method hits the documented restriction that the last payment method stays on file. Relying on an Indian card for saved auto top-up fails the regulatory path; use Guest Checkout prepaid purchases instead when that FAQ applies.
