Find Grok Bots that vanished from the sidebar after Recover

Official docs say Bot profiles and saved conversations are not necessarily lost when the cloud computer is unreachable. Recover and Update preserve durable state. Hide and Delete are the documented ways a Bot leaves the sidebar.

After sleep or one Bot missing

Forum reports include a single Bot vanishing after MacBook sleep while another Bot still lists (GrokBot gone after MacBook sleep). Treat that like other missing-sidebar cases: check Show hidden chats, then Recover / Update before Reset. Durable profiles are not necessarily deleted when the cloud computer flaps.

Check Hide first

  1. Open Grok Bot.
  2. Open Show hidden chats.
  3. Unhide any Bot you still need.

Hide from sidebar does not pause the Bot or its routines. Delete removes the active profile, conversation, and routines. Files and logins on the shared computer may remain. Hide the Bot if you may need its work later.

Recover, Update, and Reset are computer actions

When the cloud computer is unreachable, official order is:

  1. Retry, or reopen the conversation.
  2. Fully quit and restart the Grok Bot app.
  3. Choose Recover computer or Recover Agent Computer when offered.
  4. If recovery is missing: Settings → Beta → Update Agent Computer, then wait for the replacement.
  5. Reset Agent Computer only after recover and update fail, and only if you accept losing recent unsynced work.

Update Agent Computer rebuilds the latest image and preserves durable state. Recover Agent Computer replaces an unreachable computer and preserves durable state when offered. Reset Agent Computer restores the last durable snapshot and can discard recent unsaved work.

Teams: members reset from desktop only. Mobile apps cannot reset a computer. Org admin Kill VM keeps durable storage; the next session gets a fresh computer.

Sidebar empty after Recover or logout

Cursor staff (Sep 1, 2026) told users whose Bots vanished from the sidebar to restart Grok Bot. In one thread they also tweaked backend knobs. That step is on their side.

Recover is documented as preserving durable state. If Hide is empty and a restart does not restore the list, collect Grok Bot version, OS, and a screenshot, then report the issue in the product.

Alt+Tab mid-setup empties the roster

Users also report the full Bot list disappearing after Alt+Tab during first-run setup, with Recover and Update failing to restore it across devices (All bots disappeared after Alt+Tab during setup). Treat that like the empty-sidebar path: check Show hidden chats, fully quit/reopen, then Recover/Update. If the roster stays empty, file feedback with version, OS, and when Alt+Tab happened — do not invent a client-only fix staff has not published.

Pitfalls

  • A new Bot appearing after Recover on iOS is a user-reported symptom. Staff did not document Recover as wiping the old list.
  • Reset restores the last computer snapshot. Delete removes a Bot profile.
  • Cloud reachability steps live in Fix Grok Bot “Can’t reach your computer”.
