Fix Voice stuck on connecting or burning the weekly pool

Consumer Voice Mode lives in the Grok apps and on grok.com chat. Paid Voice draws from the same SuperGrok weekly usage pool as Chat, Imagine, Build, and API. A session that never leaves “connecting…” is usually a client or permission problem; a session that dies after heavy talk is often the pool.

Read the Voice slice of the meter

  1. Open Grok on the web or in the app.
  2. Go to Settings → Usage.
  3. Check the progress bar, the Voice percentage in the product breakdown, the weekly reset time, and Extra Usage Credits.

When the weekly limit is met, paid features pause until reset. Free-tier Chat and Voice limits stay available on their own schedule. From the Usage tab on the web you can buy Extra Usage Credits, enable Auto Top Up, or upgrade for a larger weekly allowance. See the full meter walkthrough in the weekly usage how-to.

Long Voice sessions and high-compute products (video, long Build jobs) share the same bar. If Voice climbs fast in the breakdown, shorten turns or wait for reset before another long call.

Clear a “connecting…” hang

  1. Confirm microphone permission for Grok (iOS Settings → Grok, Android app permissions, or the browser site settings on web).
  2. Update the Grok app, or hard-refresh grok.com in Chrome/Edge.
  3. Log out, clear the app cache (or use an incognito window on web), then sign back in with the subscription account.
  4. Restart the app. On web, try a different network if the mic test works but Voice never connects.
  5. Switch surface: phone Voice if the browser hangs, or web if the phone hangs.

If text chat works and Voice stays on connecting after those steps, use Report an issue with platform, OS/browser, and a screenshot of the connecting state.

After the paid pool is empty

Paid Voice pauses with the rest of the paid weekly features. Free-tier Voice limits continue on their separate clock — you can still open Voice Mode under that free allowance until that separate limit resets. Extra Usage Credits on the web restore paid headroom without waiting for the weekly reset.

Pitfalls

  • Consumer Voice Mode is separate from Voice Agent Builder / SIP / phone numbers at x.ai/voice. Those are Console products with their own setup.
  • Companions are iOS-only per FAQ. A Companion path failing on Android or web is expected.
  • Buying Extra Usage Credits every week costs more per action than upgrading the plan when you regularly burn the pool on Voice.
