Install the Grok Build CLI

Grok Build in the terminal is a coding agent with plan mode, diffs, skills, MCP, subagents, and headless -p. x.ai/build currently offers a free try path; launch access was SuperGrok and X Premium Plus.

Install

  1. Open a desktop terminal.
  2. Run the official installer:
curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash
  1. Follow any auth / login step the CLI prints. Do not paste API keys into chat logs.
  2. Run a small probe command from the CLI help so you know the binary is on your PATH.

First useful moves

  • Use plan mode before a wide edit.
  • Keep an AGENTS.md in the repo so the agent inherits project rules.
  • For a cited research fan-out inside Build, use the built-in /deep-research workflow (Build CLI, not grok.com chat DeepSearch branding).

Two different “Grok Builds”

  • In-product Grok Build on grok.com / iOS / Android can publish grok.me apps and is on every plan as of the Aug 19, 2026 post.
  • This CLI is the terminal agent at x.ai/build.

Teach the one the reader opened. Do not mix install steps.

Pitfalls

  • Grok Studio is retired; FAQ says use Grok Build instead.
  • Grok 4.6 powers Build / Cursor / API in the Aug 12 news. Do not claim it is the default on grok.com chat unless official consumer pages say so.
