Start a Private Chat

Private Chat keeps that thread out of your history. xAI says the conversation is deleted from their systems within 30 days, and that Private Chat content is not used for model training.

On grok.com

1. Open grok.com and sign in.
2. Start a new chat.
3. Click the ghost icon in the top right before you send the first message.
4. Talk as usual. When you leave Private Chat, that thread is gone from your history list.

On the Grok app

1. Open Grok on iOS or Android.
2. Start a new chat.
3. Tap the ghost icon (same control, top of the screen).
4. Send the message. Close the chat when you are done; it will not sit in history.

After you leave

• Older chats already in history stay until you delete them.
• Shared links you already created stay live until you remove them at grok.com/share-links.
• Feedback you later submit can still be used for training, even if you used Private Chat for the original thread.

Pitfalls

• xAI still processes the session on their servers while you talk. The ghost icon only hides it from your history list.
• Safety, security, or legal holds can keep a copy past 30 days. Read the FAQ if that matters for the topic.
• If the ghost icon is missing, you are on a host or region without the control. Use Settings → Data Controls to opt out of training on new chats instead.
