Turn on notifications when a Grok Bot finishes or needs you
Turn on Notifications for a single Bot when you want a system or mobile alert as soon as that Bot finishes work or needs input. The switch is per Bot and lives in that Bot’s settings. Official guide: Settings and notifications → Attention states and notifications.
Use this when a long cloud job runs while you are in another app, or when approvals and questions should interrupt you. Leave it off for noisy background Bots you only check on a schedule.
How attention shows without a push
The sidebar already marks Bots that need attention (a question, approval, or handoff), unread activity (a new result), and working status. Opening a conversation marks its current activity as read. The Bot menu can mark a conversation read or unread manually. Notifications are suppressed while the Grok Bot app is focused; the sidebar and dock badge still show unread activity.
Turn notifications on for one Bot
- Open the Bot that should alert you.
- Open View conversation details, then Agent settings.
- Turn on Notifications for that Bot.
- On iPhone, also allow notifications for the Grok Bot app in system Settings. Both the device permission and the Bot switch must allow the alert.
- Leave the app or switch to another surface so a push can fire (notifications stay quiet while Grok Bot is focused).
- Trigger a short task that ends or asks a question, and confirm you get the system or mobile alert.
What group chats do differently
Group chats do not have the same per-Bot notification switch. Watch the sidebar attention and unread marks for group activity, or open the group when a member Bot needs you. If one owner Bot must wake you for solo work, turn notifications on for that Bot’s one-to-one conversation instead of relying on the group thread.
Pitfalls
- Expecting a push while Grok Bot is focused — pushes are suppressed in focus; use the sidebar and dock badge instead.
- Enabling only the Bot switch on iPhone — device permission must also allow the app, or no push arrives.
- Looking for a group-wide notification toggle — groups do not expose the same per-Bot switch.
- Turning notifications on for every Bot — high-volume owners will flood you; reserve pushes for Bots whose finish or approval actually needs you.
