Understand xAI teams, roles, and domain auto-join
On xAI, a team is the unit that tracks API usage, billing, and invoices. New accounts start on a Personal Team you can see in the top bar of the xAI Console.
Roles
- Admin: can change the team name, billing details, and members.
- Member: cannot change those settings.
- The person who created the team is an Admin automatically.
Create, rename, and members
- In the Console dropdown, choose + Create Team and finish the prompts. Edit details later on Settings.
- Admins rename or describe the team on the Settings page.
- Admins add or remove people by email on the Users page and set Admin or Member.
- If someone is removed, their API keys stay with the team.
If one team is enough, rename the Personal Team and add members there.
Domain auto-join
Admins can auto-add people whose email matches a verified company domain:
- Open team Settings.
- Add the domain under Verified Domains.
- Put a
domain-verificationkey in that domain’s DNS TXT record so ownership checks pass.
Anyone who signs up with an email on a verified domain joins that team automatically.
Delete a team
Deleting a team removes its prepaid credits. Admins start that flow on the Settings page under Delete Team. Confirm you mean to wipe credits before you finish.
Pitfalls
- Consumer SuperGrok on grok.com is separate from Console team API billing. Check which product the invoice names.
- Domain join only fires for emails on a verified domain after DNS is correct.
- Removing a user does not delete their keys from the team — rotate keys if that person should lose access.
