Upload a file in a Grok chat and ask about it

Grok reads PDFs, images, spreadsheets, code, audio, and video you attach in a chat on grok.com, iOS, and Android.

Attach the file

1. Open a chat on grok.com or in the Grok app.
2. Click or tap the + next to the message box. On the web you can also drag the file onto the chat.
3. Select one file or several. Grok confirms the upload before it answers.
4. Ask for the work: summarize, extract a table, compare two docs, transcribe the audio, or name what is in the image.

How many at once: about 100 on the web, 20 on Android, several on iOS.

Size and types

Most documents, images, code, and audio go up to 150 MB per file. Grok shows an error when a file is over the limit for that surface.

Documents and data: PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV, XLSX, PPTX, HTML, XML, JSON, Markdown, LaTeX, ODT, RTF, and common code files. Images: JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, BMP. Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC, AAC. Video: MP4, MOV. GIF and SVG sometimes fail.

Ask so it can find the page

• For a PDF over 100 pages, name the page numbers you care about.
• For a CSV or XLSX, name the column or the trend you want.
• Mixed packs (PDF + screenshot + a snippet of code) work in one message.

Pitfalls

• Embedded images inside a Word file may not get visual reading. Export that page as PDF or attach the image.
• On the web, delete stored files at grok.com/files. Data Controls lives under Profile → Settings.
• Grok Bot attachments have a different size cap (25 MB on desktop, 200 MB for video). Use this page for grok.com and the Grok apps.
