Use a personal Grok Bot in Slack
See why a personal Bot cannot join Slack as a member, then pick either a published Team Bot or the Slack app (under Connect apps) that reads and posts as you.
A published Team Bot can be reached by teammates, including in Slack where that is set up. A personal Bot is not published to Slack. It cannot be @mentioned there, and it cannot be installed as a Slack app. Official pages: Team Bots and Routines. More Grok Bot jobs live on the Grok Bot hub under X, plugins and connectors.
If you need a Bot that people can talk to in Slack
That presence is a Team Bot feature. You need a Cursor team, a published Team Bot, and Slack connected the way the Team Bot docs describe.
- Confirm you are on a team that can publish Team Bots.
- Publish the Bot you want people to mention. Owner steps live in Set up a Team Bot in Grok Bot.
- Have each teammate add that published Bot and, for Slack, finish the Slack account link the Team Bot pages describe. Teammate steps live in Use a published Team Bot.
A personal Bot you created only for yourself does not become a Slack member when you connect Slack. Publishing is the documented path to a Slack presence.
If you want your personal Bot to work in Slack as you
A personal Bot can use the Slack app (under Connect apps) as you. That is read and post as the Slack user you connected, not a second Slack member. A routine can also use a Slack listener trigger. Both of those are separate from being added to a channel as a Bot.
- Connect the Slack app on the Cursor account that owns the Bot. See Connect an app to Grok Bot.
- Ask the Bot to read or draft in Slack as you. Keep sends that change a channel behind an approval you actually review.
- For a wake-on-message job, add a Slack listener on a routine and keep the match narrow so a busy channel does not spend a week of usage in a day. Steps: Set a Slack listener on a Grok Bot routine.
The listener watches a channel you choose. It does not install your personal Bot into Slack or give other people an @mention target.
What this page does not offer
There is no documented setting that turns a personal Bot into a Slack app. There is no documented @mention for a Bot that was never published as a Team Bot. If your account cannot use Team Bots, the plugin and the listener are the documented Slack routes, and they still act as you.
Pitfalls
- Connecting Slack and expecting teammates to @mention your personal Bot. Mentions in Slack are for a published Team Bot.
- Treating a Slack listener as a Slack install. The listener wakes a routine; it does not add a member.
- Watching every message in a busy channel. Official routines help says that pattern can use a week of usage in a day.
