When a Grok Bot computer rebuild will not fix anything

“Please rebuild my Agent Computer” is the most common ask on stuck-startup threads, and staff keep answering that the hosted computer was already healthy. Three Cursor replies in one week landed on causes the app reported as a connection failure:

  • Aug 28, 2026 (mohitjain, thread 169752): the computer was fine, and the black window after the splash came from the Mac not reaching it over the network.
  • Sep 2, 2026 (Colin, same thread): the real cause was an Unpaid Admin role with no paid team seat.
  • Sep 3, 2026 (deanrie, thread 170462): a Free plan with no Grok Bot plan linked, where DNS and hotspots changed nothing.

In thread 170239 (mohitjain, Sep 2, 2026) the guidance was blunter: skip Recover and Reset entirely, because the computer is fine and it will not help.

Check these before asking for a rebuild

  1. Seat and plan. Open your team's Members page at cursor.com/dashboard and confirm you hold a paid seat, and that the plan you bought is linked to the account you use in Grok Bot.
  2. Same account everywhere. Compare the email in Grok Bot against the one that owns the subscription.
  3. Network, in one test. Fully quit, switch to a phone hotspot, reopen. A load on the hotspot points at filtering on the usual network, and *.cursorvm.com plus *.*.cursorvm.com need an allowlist and an SSL-inspection exclusion.
  4. Version. Grok Bot Settings, scrolled to the bottom, gives the number staff will ask for.

What Reset actually costs

Reset restores the last saved snapshot and can drop recent or unsynced work. Recover and Update Agent Computer keep durable files and logins. Spending a Reset on an account-side cause loses work and leaves the same error.

Pitfalls

  • A healthy computer plus a failing app still shows “Can’t reach your computer.” The message covers several causes.
  • Moving ~/Library/Application Support/Grok Bot aside reruns the setup wizard and hits the same wall when the seat is unpaid.
  • Corporate laptops fail while a personal machine works, which points at network policy: Fix Zscaler SSL blocking the Grok Bot computer.
