When Grok uses real-time web and X search
xAI’s consumer FAQ states that Grok can search public X posts and run real-time web searches so answers can include up-to-date information. That is separate from the model’s training cut-off: when search tools run, Grok can pull live public pages and public X content into the reply.
What “real-time” means here
- On grok.com and the Grok apps, Grok may invoke web search and/or X search for a question that needs current facts.
- Free and paid consumer tiers both advertise real-time web and X search inside their limits (see the Free / SuperGrok cards on x.ai/pricing).
- Search uses public X posts and the public web. Private or logged-in-only pages are outside that path unless you use a connector that you authenticated (Gmail, Drive, and so on).
Training data alone does not watch live events. When you need “what happened today,” you want a turn where search actually runs.

If every short question spins a long search
Some users see a long web-search pause on simple prompts. There is no separate consumer FAQ toggle documented as “never search.” Practical controls:
- Ask a question that clearly needs only general knowledge, or paste the facts you want reasoned over.
- Use DeepSearch only when you want the research pass.
- Check Settings → Usage if paid search/chat spend looks wrong — search still draws from the shared weekly pool on paid plans.
Pitfalls
- “Real-time” does not mean Grok streams every X post into every reply — only when search tools run for that turn.
- Connector data (mail, Drive, Notion) covers your authenticated accounts; public web/X search covers public pages and public posts.
