Fix “error loading” old Grok chats

People hit a blank or “error” / “something went wrong” wall when opening older conversations or Projects on desktop or mobile. xAI does not publish a separate “error loading chats” article. The product FAQ’s account and login troubleshooting, plus the history locations in the Consumer FAQ, are the supported triage path.

Confirm you are on the right account and host

  1. Sign in with the same Google, Apple, X, or email login that created the chats.
  2. Prefer grok.com in a standard Chrome or Chromium browser. Some alternate hosts miss features such as Projects.
  3. Open history from the documented controls: profile picture (top left) on iOS; history icon (top right) on grok.com. See Find your Grok conversation history.

Clear a stuck client

The FAQ’s first-line login and activation steps clear most client mismatches:

  1. Restart the Grok app, or quit and reopen the browser tab.
  2. Log out, then sign in again with the same account.
  3. On mobile, clear the app cache (or delete and reinstall), then sign in again on the latest app version.
  4. On the web, try an incognito / private window in Chrome or Edge to rule out extensions and stale cookies.
  5. Turn off ad blockers for grok.com if Settings or billing portals refuse to open; the same class of blocker can break other account UI.

Check whether Grok itself is degraded

If every chat and Project fails at once, check status and outage steps in Check if Grok is down before wiping local data.

Report it with enough detail

When triage fails, use Report an issue in the product (or reply on a billing receipt email for billing-only problems). Include:

  • Account email
  • Platform (Web / iOS / Android) and browser or OS version
  • Screenshot or a share link for a conversation that still opens
  • Whether history fails for every thread or only older ones

Bugs go to engineering; the FAQ does not promise a fix timeline. Keep the app and browser updated so you pick up builds that ship every few days.

Pitfalls

  • A different sign-in method on the same person often looks like “lost history.” Check accounts.x.ai for linked methods before you assume deletion.
  • Private Chat threads never appear in history. Missing Private Chat is expected.
  • Deleted conversations are removed from systems within about 30 days unless a legal, safety, or compliance hold applies. After that window, self-serve history recovery is unavailable.
