Fix Grok Bot Authentication Error login loop
After a browser sign-in succeeds, Grok Bot can still show Authentication Error / try logging in again on Mac, Windows, and phone. The UI may look signed in while chat fails. Cluster threads: 170963, 171115, 171164.
Try client steps first
- Fully quit Grok Bot (Mac: Quit from the menu bar, not only close the window).
- Update to the latest desktop build, then relaunch.
- Open Settings → Updates → Update Grok Bot’s Computer when that control is available (forum report on 0.47.0: 171164 — rodschulz recovered after Update Computer).
- Sign out, sign in again with the same Cursor account, then quit and reopen once more.
- If Legacy Privacy Mode or Active Sessions revoke is in play, follow those dedicated how-tos first — different failure modes.
When it stays broken
Staff on 171115 (kevinn): some accounts need a backend machine reset. Reinstall and cache clear do not always clear the loop. Contact hi@cursor.com with:
- Cursor / Grok Bot account email
- OS and Grok Bot version
- Screenshot of the Authentication Error after a successful browser login
- Link to the forum thread you match
Ask for a backend machine reset when client Update Computer and quit/relaunch already failed.
Pitfalls
- Reset / Recover of the Agent Computer for a pure auth-token loop — staff treated several cases as backend session repair, not a user rebuild.
- Mixing this with Fix Grok Bot sign-in and Legacy Privacy Mode or Fix Grok Bot after Active Sessions revoke without checking those symptoms first.
- Expecting phone-only login to heal a desktop session that still shows Authentication Error after browser auth.
