Raise the invoiced billing limit in the xAI Console
Increase the team's monthly invoiced billing limit above the default $0 so API traffic can keep serving after prepaid credits run out, with the remainder charged to the default payment method at month end. Official Manage Billing documents the control on console.x.ai under Billing → API Credits: raise the invoiced billing limit there when you want monthly billing instead of prepaid-only rejection. At $0 (the default), xAI uses only available prepaid credits and rejects requests once that pool is empty. Monthly invoiced billing itself is disabled by default for some teams and may require contacting sales@x.ai or the contact link on the Billing page before the limit control applies.
What you need
Admin rights on the team that should accrue postpaid usage, a default payment method already on file for end-of-month charges, and a limit amount finance has approved. The billing FAQ states that when the invoiced spending limit is greater than $0, extra consumption after prepaid credits run out is charged at the end of the month. Docs also warn that once monthly invoiced usage reaches the limit you set, responses stop until you raise it again. Raise the limit on API Credits
- Open console.x.ai and select the production team in the picker before any billing change.
- Go to Billing → API Credits (also described beside API spend management in Manage Billing) and find the invoiced billing limit control.
- Set the limit above $0 to the monthly postpaid ceiling finance approved, then save so prepaid credits still burn first and overflow accrues toward that ceiling.
- Confirm a default payment method is ready for the month-end charge, using Add a payment method in the xAI Console or Set the default payment method via the xAI Management API when several methods exist.
Watch the API spend management card for the documented warning when you have used about 80% of the total monthly limit you set. For programmatic soft-limit reads and writes that mirror postpaid ceilings, use Get postpaid spending limits via the xAI Management API and Set postpaid spending limits via the xAI Management API. Preview the open period with Preview a postpaid invoice via the xAI Management API before close.
Pitfalls
Leaving the limit at $0 while expecting seamless overflow still rejects traffic the moment prepaid credits hit zero. Raising the limit without a working default payment method accrues usage that cannot settle cleanly at month end. Hitting the ceiling mid-month without a planned raise blocks responses until someone returns to Billing → API Credits and increases the limit again.
