When desktop Grok Bot voice flips mid-call
On desktop voice calls, the Bot can start on the speaking voice you saved, then switch to another voice mid-conversation without you changing anything. Forum reports (Rick_Leffke, Sep 25, 2026) describe Rex flipping to Leona while disk settings still show voiceId: rex. The same pattern appears on other Bots (Leo→Leona, Ara→Leona). Saving the preference again during the call does not reload the spoken voice for that session.
Staff (Colin) merged the desktop mid-call report into the Android voice-preference thread. Treat both as open voice-preference bugs with different surface workarounds. The account preference itself often stays correct on disk; the live call session stops honoring it.
Confirm you are on the mid-call flip
- Set the Bot’s speaking voice (for example Rex) and confirm it is saved.
- Start a voice call on desktop and confirm the first replies use that voice.
- Keep talking for several turns.
- If the spoken voice changes (commonly to Leona) while Bot settings still show the saved
voiceId, you are on this bug.
Android cold-start reversion has its own how-to (When Android voice preference does not persist). Spoken-result lag when the app is backgrounded is a different staff path.
Restore the saved voice for the next session
- Hang up the current call.
- Start a new voice call with the same Bot.
- Confirm the fresh session opens on the saved disk default again.
There is no documented in-call Settings path on desktop that permanently sticks the flipped voice back for the rest of a corrupted session. Do not invent one. A new call is the verified workaround while staff tracks the preference bug.
Keep preference checks honest
If disk still shows the voice you chose, do not wipe Bot settings or Reset the Agent Computer for a mid-call flip alone. Re-saving the same preference mid-session has not fixed the live audio for reporters. Prefer hang-up plus a new call, then watch the forum thread for a lasting fix.
For how to start a voice call, see Start voice chat with Grok Bot.
Pitfalls
- Re-saving the voice preference mid-call and expecting the spoken audio to switch back in the same session.
- Resetting or updating the Agent Computer because one voice call flipped — that does not address the session preference bug.
- Treating Android cold-start reversion and desktop mid-call flip as identical fixes — Android uses the in-call gear for the rest of that call; desktop’s verified path here is hang up and start a new call.
