When Extra Usage Credits cost more than your plan
Paid SuperGrok includes a weekly usage pool. The subscription price is the effective rate for that included week. Extra Usage Credits are a separate top-up. They keep paid features running after the week is gone. They are not priced at that same effective rate.
For the meter and the cap, see Check your weekly Grok usage.
What the included week is
- Open Settings → Usage on grok.com or in the app.
- Read the shared weekly pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build, and API.
- That allowance is baked into the SuperGrok (or higher) subscription. The FAQ shows it as a percentage, broken down by product.
A chat message spends little. A high-quality video or a long coding job spends more.
What Extra Usage Credits are
When the included week is exhausted, paid features pause until reset. Free-tier Chat and Voice keep their own limits on a separate clock.
From the web Usage tab you can buy Extra Usage Credits from $5. They land immediately, spend only after the included week is gone, and expire one year after purchase unless the purchase page says otherwise. Mobile in-app purchase is listed as coming later.
They do not match
The Extra Usage Credits note in the Grok FAQ: Extra Usage Credits are priced at standard rates, so the cost per action is higher than the effective rate from the included weekly usage in your plan.
xAI does not publish a public per-token dollar table for consumer Extra Usage Credits. The only official comparison is that sentence. Do not invent a $/MTok number for Extra Credits.
API credits are a different product
The published per-token table is for the xAI API (prepaid or on-demand), not for SuperGrok Extra Usage Credits. Example from docs.x.ai/developers/models for grok-4.3 under 200k prompt tokens: $1.25 / $2.50 per 1M input / output. Read the live table for the model you call. Those API credits are not SuperGrok Extra Usage Credits.
When to buy credits vs upgrade
- Occasional overage after a heavy week: Extra Usage Credits are the documented convenience path.
- Hitting the bar every week: the FAQ says upgrade the plan. A higher tier includes a larger weekly pool at a lower cost per action than repeatedly buying credits.
Auto Top Up (amount + monthly cap) is on the same web Usage tab if you want credits added when the balance gets low.
Grok Bot is a separate pool
Grok Bot weekly usage is not this SuperGrok bar. Bot allowance and on-demand live under Usage & Billing in the Bot app. See Understand Grok Bot usage.
Pitfalls
- Extra Usage Credits do not enlarge the included weekly percentage. They spend after that bar is empty.
- There is no official Extra Credit $/token table. Quote the FAQ “standard rates” note and your Usage tab, not a guessed MTok price.
- Do not apply the API model table to Extra Usage Credits. Different products.
- Buy credits on the web. Mobile cannot do it today.
- Sign in with the login that owns the subscription or the Usage tab will look wrong.
