When Grok Bot asks you to press Update Computer several times
After this page you can tell a software update from a computer update, and you will know when to wait instead of pressing Update again. Do not stack presses, and do not use Reset to force an update. Checked Oct 5, 2026.
There are two kinds of update. Cursor's computer recovery page says Update moves the computer to the latest version. Some updates only refresh Grok Bot's software. Others replace the whole computer, and you may be able to schedule those for later. The text under Update in Settings > Updates tells you which kind is waiting.
A software update keeps everything, including installed apps. A computer update keeps Bots, files, and logins, and removes installed apps and packages. Docs.x.ai say Update installs the latest software on the cloud computer and keeps your files in place (computer and apps, settings and notifications). Changelog v0.26.0 (Aug 25) says Update Grok Bot's Computer explains when an update only touches the software your Bots run on, so installed apps stay.
Official help also says: do not start a second Update or Reset while one is already running. If Update says Backup not ready, Grok Bot will offer the update again after a backup completes. Wait for that. Do not Reset to force the update. Agent busy means a bot could not pause in time, so the computer was not updated.
If Update reappears right after you press it
Cursor staff (Colin) said on the forum on Oct 2, 2026 that one user's first press moved the machine image, a second press rebuilt onto that same image, and the last two presses were smaller updates to the Grok Bot software running inside the machine, not full replacements. Two of those happened to ship within minutes of each other.
Staff said those in-machine updates also install on their own in the background every few minutes while your bots are idle. So if Update reappears right after a machine update finishes, give it 5 to 10 minutes with no agents working and it will usually clear on its own, without another press. Staff said they are reworking parts of this.
- Read the text under Update in Settings > Updates so you know whether a software update or a computer update is waiting.
- Press Update once. Do not start a second Update or Reset while it is running.
- If Update comes back immediately, wait 5 to 10 idle minutes with no agents working.
- If it still says Backup not ready, wait for the backup. Do not Reset to force it.
On Oct 5, 2026, staff added that an automatic computer update only starts when a newer version is available, none of your bots are in the middle of work, and the computer has been quiet for a while. It also will not happen more than about once a day, and it is not tied to a fixed time yet. After an update, an automatic one will not run again for at least a day. A configurable update window, plus a heads-up before a restart, is not available. After a restart the computer starts in UTC and then switches to your saved time zone; staff said that is expected.
Changelog v0.65.0 (Sep 30) says Automatic Updates is on by default, so Grok Bot restarts to apply updates while you are away; you can turn it off in Settings → Updates. That note is about the desktop app restarting. It is not a switch that stops computer updates.
The help page says you may be able to schedule some computer updates for later. Staff said a configurable update window is not available. Those may describe a one-off deferral versus a standing window. This page does not promise either.
Two official pages disagree
On phones, docs.x.ai troubleshooting says the same controls are Update Computer and Reset Computer under Settings → Bot → Bot Computer on iPhone and Android. Cursor's mobile help says computer updates are not available on mobile, and you should use desktop Grok Bot to update, recover, or reset the computer. This page names both and does not pick one.
The recovery order also differs. Docs.x.ai troubleshooting lists Retry, then restart the app, then Recover, then Update, then Reset. Cursor's computer-recovery page lists Retry, then fully quit, then Update, then Recover, then Reset. Use the least destructive option that your screen actually offers, and keep Reset last.

Pitfalls
- Pressing Update three or four times in a row. Staff said the later presses can be small in-machine updates, and idle time often clears the offer.
- Using Reset to force an update. Official help says not to.
- Assuming every Update keeps installed apps. A full computer update removes installed apps and packages.
