When the Windows Grok Bot chat pane stays blank after you switch Bots
By the end you will know the conversation is still there, how to force a redraw, and why hardware acceleration is only a mitigation. This is a known redraw issue on some Windows machines. Checked Oct 5, 2026.
Cursor staff (deanrie) said on the forum on Oct 2, 2026 that this is a known issue with how the Grok Bot desktop app redraws the chat on some Windows machines after switching Bots. The conversation is not lost. The window just does not repaint it until something like a scroll or resize forces a redraw. Staff said they are tracking this. There is no published fix version or ETA.
The first move is a redraw, not a settings change.
Redraw the pane
- Scroll the chat pane, or resize the Grok Bot window.
- Confirm the messages return. Staff said a quick scroll or resizing the window will redraw it.
- If the pane is still blank, fully quit Grok Bot and reopen it, then try scroll or resize again.
Check hardware acceleration (mitigation, not a fix)
Staff also said to open Settings → General and check that Use hardware acceleration is enabled. If you change it, click Restart to Apply. Staff said that from what they have seen, it behaves better with hardware acceleration on than off.
The Bot changelog (Aug 14) places Use hardware acceleration under General → System, on by default on a Mac, with Restart to Apply. Staff said Settings → General. This page names both paths. Official docs at settings and notifications do not list hardware acceleration under General. The Windows default is not stated officially, so this page does not invent one.
Hardware acceleration does not fix the blank pane. Staff said only that it behaves better. The original report on the thread already had it on when the pane went blank. Nobody has published an outcome for turning it off.

Pitfalls
- Assuming the messages were deleted. Staff said the conversation is not lost.
- Treating Use hardware acceleration as the fix. It is a mitigation, and the original report already had it on.
- Turning the setting off in hopes of a cure. That outcome has not been reported back.
