Can I recover a Private Chat I started by accident?

Can I recover a Private Chat I started by accident?

Short answer from the consumer FAQ: no history list entry, and no user-facing recovery of that thread. Private Chat (ghost icon) is built so the conversation is not viewable in your history and is deleted from xAI systems within 30 days (unless a safety, security, or legal hold applies). Content in Private Chat is also not used for model training.

What Private Chat actually does

  1. On grok.com or the Grok apps, the ghost icon starts Private Chat for that thread.
  2. When you leave it, that thread does not sit in your history list the way a normal chat does.
  3. xAI’s FAQ states deletion from their systems within 30 days for Private Chat (and for chats you delete), with the hold exceptions above.

There is no documented “undelete Private Chat” or “restore ghost thread” control on grok.com or in the apps.

If you still need the content

  1. While the Private Chat is still open on screen, copy anything you need into a normal note, email, or a new non-private chat before you leave the ghost session.
  2. If you already closed it, treat the text as gone from your history. The FAQ does not offer a recovery path for the user.
  3. For future sensitive work you might want later, use a normal chat and delete it yourself when finished, or export what you need before you delete — see Find your Grok conversation history and Share a Grok conversation, then kill the link.

Training and Data Controls

Private Chat skips model training for that thread. For ordinary chats, use Settings → Data Controls (mobile) or Settings → Data → Improve the Model (web) to opt out of training on new conversations. Feedback you later submit can still be used for training even if the original thread was Private Chat.

Pitfalls

  • Closing the ghost thread is the point of the feature — do not expect history search or share-links to bring it back.
  • Safety / security / legal retention can keep a copy past 30 days; that is not the same as a user restore button.
  • Starting Private Chat by mistake mid-topic: open a new normal chat and paste what you still have on screen before you navigate away.
