Search X posts from Grok Bot
Ask a Bot to search public posts, open a link, or count recent posts on a topic without connecting an X account. Add the X plugin only when you need private data.
Bots can search and read what's public on X without you connecting an X account. Ask a Bot to search posts, open a post from its link, read an account's posts and mentions, see who quoted or reposted a post, count recent posts on a topic, or check trends and news. This access is read-only and doesn't sign in as you. For your DMs, bookmarks, home timeline, or who liked your posts, add the X plugin from Connect apps and sign in with X. Official page: Computer and apps (“Search and read X”), checked Oct 19, 2026. The Oct 11, 2026 changelog (v0.70.2) also says Bots can search X and read posts and profiles without you connecting an X account. @bot said on Oct 7, 2026 that Grok Bot can now search, read, and monitor X. More Grok Bot jobs live on the Grok Bot hub under X, plugins and connectors.
An older news post still says the opposite on this point. The Aug 29, 2026 article Grok Bot and X tells you to sign in with the X connector, then ask a Bot to search posts, and it says paid Grok Bot users get free X API credits to start. Treat the newer computer-and-apps page as current. Those free X API credits, if they still apply, belong with the signed-in connector, not with built-in public search.
Ask a Bot to search posts
- Open Grok Bot and open a Bot of your own.
- Name the topic, the account, or the post link. You do not need to connect X first for public search.
- Ask for a search, a read, a quote or repost check, a recent-post count, or a trends and news check.
Search posts on X about [topic].
Built-in access is read-only and doesn't sign in as you. It cannot post, like, or send a DM. It cannot read DMs, bookmarks, your home timeline, or who liked your posts until you add the X plugin and sign in with X. Plugin install: Connect your X account in Grok Bot. Your home timeline still needs that plugin: Read your X timeline in Grok Bot.
@bot's “monitor” wording is not spelled out. A standing watch is not documented beyond a routine that searches again on a schedule. Do not treat built-in search as a live firehose.
Related public reads
Public mentions of any account are the same built-in path: Check X mentions in Grok Bot. A topic roundup is Pull together what's happening on X. If a tag on X never reaches your Bot, see When tagging @bot on X does not reach your Grok Bot.
Pitfalls
- For private data (DMs, bookmarks, home timeline), add the X plugin.
- Expecting built-in search to post, like, or read DMs. It is read-only and does not sign in as you.
- Applying the Aug 29 “free X API credits” line to built-in public search. That sentence is from the connector-era news post.
- Building a “monitor X” workflow that is not a routine you scheduled yourself. What “monitor” means is not documented.
