When iPhone says “Couldn't create the Bot” while adding a template

Use this when you want a published Bot template on your roster and iPhone shows Couldn't create the Bot. Try again. over the template preview. The official add path is still Share menu → Create template → Copy link → open the preview on x.ai → Add to Grok Bot. That path is documented. The iPhone toast is not. Checked Oct 16, 2026.

What is documented

Create and manage Bots → Share a Bot, and the FAQ, say: open the Share menu, choose Create template, copy the link, open the preview on x.ai, then choose Add to Grok Bot. The recipient needs the Grok Bot app to finish adding it. Neither page says anything about iPhone versus desktop.

Changelog v0.70.2 (Oct 11, 2026) says two related things. Publishing, sharing, or deleting a Bot, and adding one from a template, work while that Bot's computer is asleep or unreachable. Bots can also find a Bot template that fits what you describe and link it in the chat. Linking a template is not the same as installing one from a pasted URL. The changelog does not document a Bot installing a template because you pasted the link.

There is no staff post, docs entry, or changelog line that names a cause, an acknowledgment, or a fix for the iPhone toast. This page does not invent one.

What users have reported

Users reported the toast on iPhone while adding a template (one screenshot was the Side Hustle CEO preview). Separate user reports say the same add worked on desktop, including on a Mac, and that the iPhone could then open the Bot that desktop had added. Those are user reports, not staff confirmation.

A user-reported workaround is to paste the template link into an existing Bot chat and ask that Bot to add it. Changelog v0.70.2 only says a Bot can find a template and link it. It does not say a Bot installs a template from a pasted link. Treat paste-the-link as a user workaround, not as the official install path.

What to try

  1. Follow the official path: open the preview on x.ai and choose Add to Grok Bot, then finish in the Grok Bot app.
  2. If iPhone still shows Couldn't create the Bot. Try again., try the same preview on the Grok Bot desktop app. Users report that desktop add can succeed when iPhone does not.
  3. After a desktop add works, open Grok Bot on the iPhone and see whether that Bot now appears on the same account.
  4. If you try the user-reported paste-the-link workaround, say so when you report the toast. Do not treat a successful paste as proof that the official iPhone path is fixed.

Adding a shared Bot creates a copy on your account. Official docs say it does not give you the creator's computer, logins, or conversation history.

Pitfalls

  • Treating the iPhone toast as a documented “iPhone cannot add templates” rule. No official page says that.
  • Calling paste-the-link the official install path. Staff and docs only document the x.ai preview and Add to Grok Bot.
  • Resetting the Agent Computer because a template add failed on iPhone. Nothing official ties this toast to a broken computer.
