Control Grok training, X personalization, chats, and account deletion

Data Controls decide whether new chats help train the model, whether Grok may personalize from X, and how you wipe history or the account. Private Chat is a separate control covered in Start a Private Chat.

Opt out of model training

On the Grok mobile app:

  1. Open Settings → Data Controls.
  2. Turn off Improve the model.

On grok.com:

  1. Open Settings → Data.
  2. Turn off Improve the Model.

After you opt out, new conversations are not used for training. Feedback you later submit may still be used. Some unauthenticated regions (outside the EU/UK) may not show the opt-out.

Personalize Grok using X

On the same Data Controls / Data screens, find Personalize Grok using X. Leave it on when you want Grok to use your X signal for personalization. Turn it off when you want that path closed. Linking X for sign-in and Premium+ benefits is a separate Settings → Account step.

Delete conversations

  • Mobile: tap-hold a chat → Delete Conversation. To wipe everything, open Data Controls → Delete All Conversations.
  • grok.com: use the trash control on a history item, or the Settings controls that delete all conversations.

xAI says deleted conversations are removed from systems within about 30 days, unless a legal, safety, or compliance hold applies.

Delete or restore the account

  1. Open Data Controls / Settings and choose Delete Account, or follow the steps at xAI Accounts linked from the product FAQ.
  2. Deleting the xAI account also removes API access on that same login.
  3. You can restore within 30 days by signing in again and confirming restoration (product FAQ). That restore window is separate from the “up to 30 days to finish deleting data from systems” retention note in the legal FAQ.
