Put Grok Bot on the iPhone Action Button
Use this when you want a hardware press on iPhone to talk with Grok Bot. On Oct 19, 2026, the Grok Bot account @bot posted: "Grok Bot is now one step closer. Set it as your iPhone's Action Button and press it to talk with Bot." That post is the official announcement. It gives no steps, no device list, and no app version. Grok Bot docs, the Bot changelog, and x.ai/news do not mention the Action Button. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
This page is iPhone only. The official post does not mention any other phone.
Which iPhones have an Action Button
Use Apple's list. Do not shorten it to "iPhone 15 Pro or newer." Apple's models with an Action button are: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That list includes iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16e. Those are not Pro models. If your iPhone is not on Apple's list, it has no Action Button. Apple documents a different Accessibility control for older phones; that is Back Tap, below, and it is not an official Grok Bot fallback.
No official Grok Bot page ties this feature to a specific Grok Bot app version. This page does not either.
Set the Action Button to a Shortcut
Apple's Action Button guide says: open the Settings app, tap Action Button, then pick an action. For Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility, you have to tap the button below that action and select a specific option. Otherwise the Action Button does nothing.
The official Grok Bot path that is documented as Apple's, not as a Grok Bot docs step, stops there: Settings → Action Button → Shortcut, then pick the option under Shortcut.
Users have reported a Grok Bot item in that Shortcut picker. Grok Bot docs, the FAQ, and the Bot changelog do not name a Shortcuts action, and they do not document a path through "Grok Bot" in that list. Treat the exact item you tap under Shortcut as user-reported until an official Grok Bot page names it. After you pick an option, press the Action Button to talk with Bot, which is what the @bot post says.
If the Action Button does nothing, Apple's guide is the first check: the action is set to Shortcut, but no specific option is selected under it.
In-app live conversation on a Bot you already have open is a different control. That path lives on Start voice chat with Grok Bot. This page does not treat that in-app label as the Shortcuts action name.
If the Shortcut list has no Grok Bot item
That gap is user-reported. One report was an iPhone 16 Pro where the Shortcut list showed the regular Grok app and not Grok Bot. There is no official cause and no official fix. Do not treat reinstalling, updating, or opening the app as a documented repair. If you report it, say which apps appeared in the list and which iPhone model you have.
Back Tap is also user-reported as a workaround, not an official Grok Bot fallback. Apple documents Back Tap itself: on iPhone 8 or later, go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap, choose Double Tap or Triple Tap, and pick an action. Apple says that action can be a Siri Shortcut. Users have reported using Back Tap to run a Grok Bot shortcut. Grok Bot docs do not say to do that.
Siri and hands-free
A Siri phrase that starts Grok Bot voice is not documented. A custom wake word is not documented either.
Cursor staff (Colin) said on forum thread 173550 on Oct 2, 2026 that a custom "Hey Grok" wake word is not really possible. Staff said the realistic path is going through the system assistant, for example a Siri phrase or the iPhone Action Button that opens a voice chat with your bot directly, with no ETA. The Action Button part of that path is now official, from the Oct 19 @bot post. Nothing official says a Siri phrase starts Grok Bot voice. This page does not claim one.

Pitfalls
- Shortening Apple's hardware list to "15 Pro or newer." iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and 16e are on the list and are not Pro models.
- Treating a user-reported Shortcut row as an official Grok Bot action name. Official Grok Bot pages do not name that action.
- Calling Back Tap the official fallback. Apple documents Back Tap; Grok Bot does not.
- Expecting a Siri phrase or a "Hey Grok" wake word. Staff said a custom wake word is not really possible, and no official page documents a Siri phrase for Grok Bot voice.
